New toy story - Mattel forced to recall again

The world's leading toy maker, Mattel, has announced a third recall of Chinese-made toys, saying it would take back more than 800,000 toys worldwide as they contained 'impermissible' levels of lead.

The latest recall involves three Fisher-Price toy models and eight Barbie brand playsets. No Barbie dolls were included. Mattel UK said a total of 2,540 toys were affected in the UK and said the Republic of Ireland was not affected.

In total, 522,000 US toys and another 322,000 outside the US are being recalled. The toys were shipped between August 2006 and July 31 this year, the company said.

A spate of toy recalls has sparked concern over the quality of products made in China.
