The developer Sean Dunne is today lodging an application with Dublin city council  for permission to build a 37-storey tower in Ballsbridge in Dublin.

The diamond shaped 132-metre building will be built on a seven acre site currently occupied by Jurys and the Berkeley Court Hotel.

The mixed use development will house apartments, shops, offices, a hotel, embassies, theatres, galleries and an ice rink.

In 2005, Sean Dunne paid €54m an acre for the site, a record at the time.

In June, Dublin City Councillors rejected a local area plan for Ballsbridge which would allow high rise developments up to twenty storeys.

But the developers say for commercial reasons this project needs to be 37 storeys high.

In a statement, the developer, Sean Dunne described buildings like the Jurys one as outmoded and ugly.

He said the proposals for this site would begin the development of Ballsbridge for the twenty-first century.

But local residents say they do not accept that this is the way forward.

The sixteen residents' groups in the area said that allowing this development to go ahead would make a mockery of the planning process.

They said they were confident that City Councillors would not be browbeaten into accepting developments they know are wrong for the city.

The plans will be on display to the public in Berkeley Court hotel until Sunday.

Those who are opposed have five weeks to lodge their objections.
