Mohawk Europa - Higher costs

Shannon based tool maker Mohawk Europa, which employed 92 workers has confirmed its closure this evening after previous warnings.

The Company, which has been based in Shannon since 1963, had incurred losses over the last few months due to higher production costs and a strong euro.

Mohawk Europa in July served notice that it will be seeking redundancies from the beginning of August.

The company, which manufactures specialised cutting tools for the aerospace, car and medical industries, had proposed job saving measures and a survival plan.

However, this evening it said those measures were rejected by the workforce. Subsequent talks at the Labour Relations Court had also broken down.

This evening a company spokesperson said that they had no other choice but to close down. A liquidator is now to be appointed.
