Competition body faces big legal bill

The Supreme Court has awarded the Irish League of Credit Unions costs following its defence of a case brought against it by the Competition Authority.

The authority had alleged anti-competitive practices in the ILCU's savings protection scheme for its members.

But the Supreme Court earlier this year found that it had failed to provide a convincing analysis of ILCU activities as being anti-competitive. The Supreme Court ruling overturned an earlier High Court judgement.

The costs figure is not being disclosed, but is understood to run into millions of euro. ILCU chief Liam O'Dwyer said the Competition Authority had refused requests to withhold its action to allow the league to agree a revised scheme, and as a result 'millions of euro have been wasted'.
