German sales were weaker in May

Official figures show that retail sales in Germany declined in May.

Underlying sales - adjusted for price and seasonal factors - fell by 1.8% from the previous month, according to the federal statistics office Destatis.

On a 12-month basis, the decline was even more pronounced, with retailers reporting a decline in business of 3.7%.

That was in part because May this year had fewer shopping days than May 2006.
