The World Bank has approved Robert Zoellick, the US nominee, as its next president.

Zoellick, a former top US diplomat and trade chief, was unanimously approved for a five-year term to succeed Paul Wolfowitz, who is to step down on Saturday after a promotion scandal involving his partner, a bank employee.
