Dublin city councillors have voted overwhelmingly to reject plans for a high-rise development in Ballsbridge.
Developer Sean Dunne had paid €50m an acre for the Jurys Hotel site with plans for a landmark, 32-storey development.
But last night councillors voted to reject a recommendation by officials that would have allowed high-density apartment and office developments along with big retail outlets.
No councillors voted in favour of the proposal, with many saying it did not suit the character of Ballsbridge and was developer-led.
What Dublin City Council did last night was reject a local area plan, so this means another local area plan will have to be drawn up.
In the meantime this means heights of the buildings will have to be in line with current heights in the area. And the land will not be rezoned from residential.
Sean Dunne paid €260m for the Jurys Ballsbridge and Towers site, which worked out at about €57m an acre. He then bought the adjoining, smaller site of the Berkeley Court Hotel for €119m, just over €58m an acre.
He wanted mixed use development on the site - hotels, retail and residential, with a roadway or walkway through from Pembroke Road to Shelbourne Road.
