Restructuring costs at European aircraft maker Airbus led to first-quarter net losses of €10m at its parent group EADS. This compared with profits of €522m in the same period last year.
EADS attributed the loss to a restructuring provision of €688m for its Power8 restructuring plan, under which 10,000 jobs in Europe will be eliminated at Airbus over the next four years in order to save €5 billion by 2010.
The measures have sparked widespread protests from unions. Deliveries of the A380, the world's largest commercial airliner and the cornerstone of Airbus's efforts to catch up with US rival Boeing, have been delayed three times and are now two years behind schedule because of production problems.
