Aer Lingus - Oil price blamed for hike

Aer Lingus passengers flying to the US and Middle East will pay more for their flights after the airline decided to increase its long-haul fuel surcharge with effect from today. It blamed recent rises in the price of oil.

The fuel surcharge on flights to and from Ireland to New York, Boston, Chicago, Orlando, Washington and Dubai will rise from €35 to €40, while the charge will be €50 on the Los Angeles and San Francisco routes.

Aer Lingus commercial director Enda Corneille said oil prices continued to be volatile and the cost of fuel had risen significantly in recent weeks.

'We said last May that we would keep our surcharge under review to reflect changes in the price of fuel, and today's decision to increase the charge is consistent with that strategy. We remain committed to reviewing levels of our surcharge in line with current market trends,' he said.
