Supervalu stocks up on Irish made produce

Supermarket group SuperValu has reported an 11% increase in retail sales to €2 billion last year, and it said it created 1,054 jobs in the twelve months.

SuperValu plans to open 8 new supermarkets this year, compared to 11 in 2006, and it said a further €49m will be used to refurbish or extend another 15 stores.

A total of 180 independently owned supermarkets trade under the brand, which is operated by the Musgrave Group.

The group said it plans to create another 580 jobs this year across the group, and it pointed out that 75% of the produce sold in its stores is either produced or manufactured in Ireland.
