Green energy supplier Airtricity has announced plans to help construct a $1.5 billion transmission network to carry wind power in Texas.

Airtricity, which develops and operates wind farms, is one of five companies involved in the project. One of the other investors in the project is Babcock and Brown which now owns Eircom.

The transmission network will span 800 miles in Texas. Airtricity chief executive, Eddie O'Connor, compared the project to the construction of a power station greater than the entire energy generation for Ireland.
