Bedminster announces first UK move

Businessman Bill McCabe's waste-to-energy business Bedminster has announced its first venture in the UK.

The company has become involved in a joint venture to build a waste treatment facility in Mersyside which is scheduled to start working at the end of 2008.

The joint venture is with Cory Environmental, one of the largest waste and recycling companies in the UK, which employs over 1,000 people.

Bedminister said the new plant will help local authorities avoid fines under the EU Landfill allowance trading scheme, where they are liable for fines up to £150 per tonne if 70% of their biodegradable waste is not diverted from landfill.

The Bedminister technology is a system which uses a large rotating steel drum to convert biodegradable waste to bio-fuel or raw compost.

Bedminster already operates twelve plants using this technology in North America, Australia and Japan, which process over one million tonnes of waste a year.

Best known as the founder of the SmartForce e-learning group, Mr McCabe holds a controlling interest in Bedminster through his private investment vehicle Oyster Capital.
