Aer Lingus cost cutting talks fail to start

Efforts to resolve the Aer Lingus dispute over cost cutting remain deadlocked this evening.

Aer Lingus CEO Dermot Mannion has said the company will not be rowing back from its introduction of lower terms for new recruits from February.

SIPTU described the airline's position as "disgraceful".

Aer Lingus says it has to introduce a wide range of costcutting measures because of the highly competitive and volatile aviation market.

But SIPTU won't enter intensive talks until the company rescinds that system for new recruits which it describes as a breach of an existing agreement.

SIPTU wants this matter referred to the Labour Court immediately.

Behind the scenes effects will be made over the coming days to try to break the deadlock between SIPTU and Aer Lingus management.

The result of SIPTU's ballot for industrial action will be known on Monday - and resolving this difficult row by the end of the month seems increasingly unlikely.
