British Airways is adding £240 (€378) to the cost of a long-haul return flight if a passenger puts two bags in the aircraft's hold.

From 13 February, BA passengers will also pay an extra £120 (€181) on short-haul return flights and £60 (€90) on domestic return flights if they take two bags on to the plane.

The rule means that from next Tuesday customers will be able to put a bag with a maximum weight of 32kg in the hold - this limit will fall to 23kg after September 30.

They are also allowed to bring one piece of sporting equipment free of charge .

Passengers will have to pay the extra charges even if the combined weight of the two bags is below the limit.

Until September 30, passengers will receive a discount if they pay in advance online - the extra charge per bag will be £168, £84 and £42 for return long-haul, short-haul and domestic flights respectively.

Flights to America, Canada, the Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will be exempt from the new charges to bring, according to BA's website, its new excess charging policy 'in line with the local government regulations'.

The new rules, which are on the BBC website, allow infants to check one bag, plus a collapsible buggy and a car seat, into the aircraft free of charge.

First class travellers will be allowed three bags free.
