Shoppers face chicken, drinks rises

There have been warnings from two separate industry groups that shoppers could face more price increases.

The Beverage Council of Ireland said it seemed inevitable that prices of soft drinks would rise. It blamed significant rises in the cost of energy, labour and ingredients.

BCI chief executive Bernard Murphy said soft drinks makers had absorbed these increases so far, but was now facing rises which were significantly above inflation.

Meanwhile, Irish Poultry Processors said spiralling worldwide wheat prices would lead to increases of around 15% in the price of whole and fillet chickens.

The industry group said Irish chickens were fed mainly on wheat. It said droughts and consequent poor harvests in Australia and parts of Europe had hit supply, while the increasing use of grain in green fuels was also pushing prices higher.
