80% of farms can't get eircom broadband - IFA

According to the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) only one in five farmers are able to access to broadband through Eircom.

The Irish Farmers Association is now calling for a €250 installation grant for every household that cannot get broadband via their fixed phone line along with an annual tax break of €75 a year for three years to drive demand for wireless broadband services.

The IFA's research was carried out amongst subscribers of its IFA Telecom arm.

IFA's Pat Smith said "access to affordable broadband is essential in rural Ireland. Hundreds of thousands of rural homes and businesses need the issue addressed now by the Government."

Eircom earlier this week said it is taking all broadband orders placed within the five main urban areas of Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway.

Eircom also said it has extended the reach of broadband availability resulting in an additional 24,000 customers who now qualify for broadband.
