Petrol and diesel prices fell by 1 cent a litre in December, and are not set to fall more in the short term, despite lower international oil prices, according to the AA.
The national monthly survey by the motoring organisation found a litre of petrol now costs an average of 103.4 cent, and diesel costs 103.5 cent.
AA public affairs manager Conor Faughnan said: 'Considering what has happened to fuel prices in the last six months, I suppose we should be happy that the price is at these levels'.
'Nevertheless we had hoped for a little better. In recent weeks the international oil price, the relative weakness of the dollar and the mildness of the winter season throughout the northern hemisphere have all been factors that conspired in our favour', he added.
He said that AA does not expect to see a significant change in petrol prices for the Irish consumer in the short term.
He said as the Irish economy is so dependent on the price of oil, over which we have no control, in addition to the environmental imperative, we need to develop alternative fuels.
