Tidal energy firm wins Canada contract

The Irish energy technology company, OpenHydro, which generates energy from tidal currents, has won a contract from Nova Scotia Power in Canada to pilot the tidal turbine technology with a view to eventually building a tidal farm.

OpenHydro was selected by Nova Scotia Power from over 20 technology suppliers world-wide. Nova Scotia Power provides more than 97% of the electricity across the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

'OpenHydro is delighted to have been selected by Nova Scotia Power for the deployment of a demonstration tidal installation in the Bay of Fundy, one of the world's best tidal sites.

This project further validates OpenHydro's future programme for farms of tidal turbines, silently and invisibly generating renewable energy under the world's oceans,' said James Ives, CEO, OpenHydro.

Open Hydro has raised €10m over the last two years from Irish private and corporate investors, to develop and trial technology off the Orkney Islands to harness energy from the tide.
