M&S reports strong sales growth

Marks & Spencer has reported a 5.6% rise in underlying sales in the third quarter between October and December, in line with expectations and underlining a recovery at the British retailer.

Underlying food sales at M&S's British stores rose by 3.6%, while underlying sales of general merchandise rose 7.1%.

Chief executive Stuart Rose said in a statement Marks and Spencer remained on track to further drive and broaden its business.

The company reported a 70% jump in online sales, while its international division continued to perform well with sales up 18.2% over the period.
