Strong figures released by tourism body

Tourism this year has been very strong, according to new figures from the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation.

The ITIC expects the figures to be even stronger next year as Ireland capitalises on the success of the Ryder Cup, a second terminal at Dublin Airport and looks forward to a National Conference Centre.

The ITIC says 7.5m visitors came to Dublin in 2006, up 11% on last year. The number of US tourists visiting Ireland has returned to the level of before the 11 September attacks five years ago and the European market delivered growth of 16%.

The chief executive of ITIC, Eamonn McKeon, said that he was very pleased with the figures.
