Stay on scheme pending BUPA appeal

BUPA has indicated that it will appeal the High Court's decision to uphold the Government's risk equalisation scheme to the Supreme Court.

The High Court was told this morning that the Minister for Health had agreed to continue a stay on the implementation of the scheme until January 19.

At that stage BUPA is expected to apply to the Supreme Court for an extension of the stay pending the outcome of the appeal. Senior Counsel for BUPA Paul Sreenan told the court that the matter of the appeal was a separate issue to BUPA's withdrawal from the Irish market.

Last week BUPA said it would pull out of Ireland over risk equalisation, which compels it to pay rival VHI for covering a much older age group of consumers.
