Revenue to simplify relief claims

Revenue has announced new ways to make it easier to claim tax relief. The details follow yesterday's Budget announcement by Finance Minister Brian Cowen, who said taxpayers would be given easier access to tax reliefs.

Up to now only two types of relief - mortgage and private health insurance - have been allocated at source. It is estimated that up to €100m a year in reliefs is unclaimed.

Next year the new measures will simplify the allocation of age-related tax credits, relief for trade union subscriptions and VAT filing for small traders.

In 2008, Revenue will develop systems to automatically grant refunds for expenses such as hospital and pharmacy costs and tuition fees. The tax body will also examine the possibility of extending the scheme to cover doctor, dentist and nursing home fees.

Revenue recently launched a publicity campaign aimed at encouraging taxpayers to claim their entitlements.
