Brendan Kennedy is to succeed Anne Maher as chief executive officer of the Pensions Board, the body which regulates pension schemes and advises the Government on policy.
Mr Kennedy joined the board as actuarial adviser in 2004, and was involved in preparing the National Pensions Review.
Ms Maher leaves the board on November 30 after 10 years in charge.
