Denis O'Brien's mobile phone company Digicel has started its Pan Pacific roll out with the commercial launch of Samoa's first GSM network.
Samoa is located in the South Pacific, midway between Hawaii and New Zealand.
Digicel Pacific said it will now introduce mobile services, which will 'revolutionise the telecommunications experience' for Samoan customers.
With its Samoan partner CSL Mobile, Digicel says it has built a state-of-the-art GSM network that provides 80% population coverage, and that 36 retail store outlets are also expected to open across the country.
Digicel received a GSM licence from the Government of Samoa in April 2006 and then acquired Telecom Samoa.
Denis O'Brien, founder and chairman of Digicel Pacific said the company intends to bring Digicel to more than 23 island nations in the region as mobile markets continue to liberalise.
Digicel Caribbean, the sister company to Digicel Pacific, launched in 2001 and is now the largest GSM provider in the Pan Caribbean region.
