New business activity up 2% on 2005 levels

Over 15,000 new businesses have been established in Ireland since the start of the year, according to a new publication from Bank of Ireland.

The bank's Business Start-Up Barometer, which uses statistics from Vision-net.ie, reported that some 15,161 new companies have been set up since January. This equates to 75 new businesses each day, a 2% increase on 2005 figures.

The construction and civil engineering sector has had the most activity and accounts for 12.3% of all the new businesses set up this year.

Dublin was the most popular location for setting up a new business, with about a third of all new businesses locating there.
