New figures show a sharp drop in new car sales in September compared with the same month last year.
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) said new car sales last month came to 6,145, down 12.3% compared with a year earlier. For the first nine months of this year, sales are up 4% to 172,052.
Meanwhile, SIMI chief executive Cyril McHugh - responding to a recent Government report on climate change - said the only way to reduce emissions from cars was to encourage people to replace older cars with 'cleaner, newer cars'.
