60% of those without a pension claim they can afford to contribute to one each month, according to a survey.
The research, carried out for Bank of Ireland Life, also found that 71% of the people surveyed did not understand the tax reliefs available for pension contributions.
BoI Life's Brian Sullivan said it now appeared that a lack of awareness of tax benefits, and not affordability, was the main barrier to pensions take-up.
70% of those without a pension who thought they could afford one were in the 25-35 age category. 40% of respondents said they could afford a monthly pension payments of €100-200.
