Contact lens maker Bausch & Lomb is to lay off around 200 temporary workers at its plant in Waterford. The plant employs 1,750 people.

In a statement, the company said it would be cutting 400 jobs in its contact lens manufacturing operations in Europe and the US over the next few months.

Bausch & Lomb said it would continue to adjust the numbers of temporary workers to meet changing business conditions, and expected to rehire some of them in the new year.

It had added to its temporary workforce to increase production of its Pure Vision silicone hydrogel contact lens.
