Guyana to be latest Digicel market

Denis O'Brien's telecommunications group Digicel is to receive a licence from the Government of Guyana to operate a GSM network.

The licence will enable Digicel to offer Guyana mobile telecommunications services while expanding the company's business into South America.

The issuance of the licence will be subject to the public consultation process required under the Guyana Telecommunications Act 1990.

Digicel says that Guyana has a population of nearly 800,000 people with mobile penetration at approximately 22%.

Since its launch in 2001, Digicel has become the fastest growing wireless telecommunications operator in the Caribbean.
