Exploration company Island Oil & Gas has made what it describes as a significant gas discovery at the Old Head of Kinsale off the Cork coast.
Island said initial indications from well 49/23-1 are that the gas extends over an area of more than 22 square kilometres, with potential volumes of 90 to 120 billion cubic feet.
The find is located 25kn from Marathon's existing production facilities at Kinsale.
Island says it has now suspended the well and will return next year to carry out an extended test.
