The Revenue has confirmed it is examining the tax affairs of individuals who pay for significant building work with cash. The policy is part of the Revenue's recent clampdown on the construction industry.

Revenue is planning 15,000 audits for this year. A quarter of them will focus on the construction sector.

RTE News is aware of one case where when the tax authorities spotted a large cash transaction. They audited the builder and then audited the client.

Many of the tip-offs come from financial institutions who are suspicious of large cash movements.
