It has emerged today that property developer Liam Carroll bought a 22% stake in Greencore yesterday. It is believed the shares were sold by Irish financier Dermot Desmond.

A note to the Irish Stock Exchange from NCB Stockbrokers said that Aurum Nominees bought the 42 million shares.

It added that of these, 13.62% are beneficially held on behalf of Bloomburg Limited and 9.85% held on behalf of Gainsco Limited. Both of these are under the control of Mr Carroll.

Last month the group posted a 14.3% rise in first-half profit after tax and said it would focus on the convenience food market.

The company also expects to benefit from property deals as it restructures its agribusiness.

Shares in Greencore closed up one cent at €4.08 in Dublin.
