Exploration company Island Oil & Gas has drilled the first well in its 2006-2007 programme at Seven Heads West off the Cork coast.
The company said Well 48/23-3 had encountered gas. Island and its partners will now submit a testing programme for the well to the Department of Communications, Marine & Natural Resources.
Island has interests in nine offshore licences, including one producing gas field.
