Report on mandatory pensions soon

Seamus Brennan - Voluntary system won't deliver

Social Affairs Minister Seamus Brennan has said he expects to have a report setting out the options for a mandatory pensions system next month.

Speaking at the National Pensions Forum in Dublin, the Minister said international experience suggested that no fully voluntary system will deliver the required level of pensions coverage.

A review of the pensions system carried out by the Pensions Board published earlier this year said the existing voluntary system could deliver better coverage with the right incentives, but Minister Brennan later asked the board to look at the options for a mandatory system.

Mr Brennan said he was encouraged by a recent survey showing that 64$ of respondents backed the view that pensions should be compulsory.
