Figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show that new car sales in April were flat compared with the same month last year at 17,413.
But for the first four months of the year, sales are up 6.6% at 111,989.
Light commercial vehicles showed a 7% drop compared with April 2005, but heavy commercial vehicle registrations almost trebled and bus and coach figures almost quadrupled.
