New car sales race up 8% in first quarter

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) today said new car sales increased by 6% in March compared to the same month in 2005.

There were 26,190 new cars sold last month compared to March 2005 (24,690). Sales for the first three months of the year were up 8% to 94,683 on the same period in 2005.

SIMI Chief Executive Cyril McHugh said the strong growth reflected the overall buoyancy of the economy.
