Digicel gets license in Turks, Caicos markets

Denis O'Brien's Caribbean mobile phone operation, Digicel, has been granted a license to establish a GSM cellular network in the newly liberalised market of Turks and Caicos.

The most recent license will position the Caribbean company with operations in 16 markets and follows the conclusion by the Government of Turks & Caicos in January this year of the 106-year telecommunications monopoly held by Cable & Wireless.

Last month with the completion of its Cingular Wireless acquisition, Digicel entered negotiations to acquire Bouygues Telecom Caraïbe in the French West Indies and finalized plans to roll-out WiMax to 1.4 million customers throughout Jamaica.
