The Irish Taxation Institute has said that a high percentage of Irish workers are not aware of the tax credits available to them.
Chief executive Mark Redmond was speaking at the launch of Tax Return Week, a public information week running until April 1.
The institute is encouraging people to review their tax situation and organise their tax returns well in advance of October's deadline. It found that one in eight self-employed people who filed tax returns electronically last year did so on the last day.
The body is also publishing guides in five different languages this week - in recognition of the growing number of foreign workers in the country. The guides will be published in Polish, Czech, Slovak, Latvian and Lithuanian.
The institute is also holding a forum for the construction industry today and is re-launching its website www.taxireland.ie.
