Swiss Re profits slump on disaster claims

The Swiss re-insurance group Swiss-Re reported today that net profit last year had slumped by 40% from the 2004 figure because of the costs of natural
disasters last year. Net profit amounted to 1.5 billion Swiss francs (€1 billion).

The results were far lower than had been expected by analysts who had estimated the outcome at about 1.8 billion Swiss francs. Claims arising from natural disasters cost the company 3 billion Swiss francs last year.
