The number of new cars licensed last year rose by 11% to 166,270, according to the Central Statistics Office. This was the highest figure since 2000.
The number of second-hand cars licensed jumped by nearly 80% to 38,207.
A breakdown of new car sales shows that Toyota led the way with 23,490, followed by Ford (19,735) and Volkswagen (14,999).
