Renewable energy company Airtricity is to resume building wind farms in Ireland for the first time in two years. It has announced four new developments in counties Limerick, Cavan and Wexford, which will double its existing generation capacity.

Airtricity is planning the development of a 50MW facility in Bindoo, Co Cavan, a 27MW facility in Richfield, Co Wexford, a 25.5MW facility Tournafulla and a 7.5MW plant at Knockastanna, both in Co Limerick. The company says these new Irish plants will help ensure renewable energy supply to its Irish customers.

To support these developments and its international expansion, the company also said it has successfully raised €130m which will fund development both at home and abroad.

'At a time when energy supply, shortages and increasing costs are dominating headlines both at home and abroad, this is a timely boost for our customer base in Ireland,' commented Eddie O'Connor, CEO at Airtricity.

'It is more obvious now that we can not be held hostage to fortune and rely on imported energy and fuel sources to power our expanding economy,' he added. 'The wind conditions here are the best in Europe and we must maximise its potential for the benefit of all,' he concluded.
