North American visitor numbers down

Figures from the Central Statistics Office show that foreign visitors made just over 600,000 trips to Ireland in October, up more than 10% on the same month last year. For the first ten months of 2005, the number of trips was up 5.5% to just over six million.

Irish people made 479,000 trips abroad in October, down 5.6% on the same month last year. The figure for the first ten months of the year was up 11.4%, however, to just under 5.3 million.

A breakdown of visits from abroad showed that trips made by British visitors in the first ten months were up nearly 10% compared with the same period last year. Trips from other European countries were nearly 28% higher, but visits from North America were down 8.7%.
