Patrick Neary will take over as chief executive of the Financial Regulator in February, when current chief Liam O'Reilly retires.

Mr Neary is currently prudential director at the Financial Regulator, an area which involves the protection of consumers' deposits, funds and policies. Chairman Brian Patterson said Mr Neary had played a central role in the shape and direction the body had taken since its establishment in 2003.

Mr Patterson said Mr Neary had been the unanimous choice of a selection panel which included non-executive members of the regulatory authority and international expert Kaarlo Jannari.
