More visitors despite American drop

Central Statistics Office figures show that overseas visitors made 648,800 trips to Ireland in September, up by 52,800, or 8.9%, compared with the same month last year.

For the first nine months of the year, overseas trips were up 5% on the same period last year at 5.4 million.

A breakdown showed that in the first nine months, visits from Britain were up 77,300 on the same period a year earlier, while European visitors grew by more than 207,000. Trips from North America fell by 7,400, however, while visits from other areas were down 20,600.

Irish residents made 602,600 trips abroad in September, up 11.9% on the same month last year. For the first nine months, the number of trips abroad was up 13.5% to 4.8 million.
