Bausch & Lomb to extend lens plant

Bausch & Lomb Ireland, which employs 1,400 people in Waterford, has announced a €42m expansion of its contact lens plant in the city.

The company says the move is designed to meet increasing demand for its PureVision product.

The 3,000 square metre extension, which is backed by IDA Ireland, is due to be completed in May 2006.

'This investment will significantly raise the level of technology in our manufacturing processes, which will allow us to better compete with increasingly attractive manufacturing cost structures in Asia,' said Frank O'Regan, vice president of lens operations in Europe.
