The number of new cars licensed in August rose by 15.5% from the same time last year. Figures from the Central Statistics Office show that a total of 11,086 new cars were licensed last month compared with 9,597 in August 2004.

First licensing of second hand private cars soared by 93.9% on the same time last year, the CSO figures revealed.

The number of new goods vehicles licensed was 2,963 in August 2005 compared with 2,349 in the corresponding month last year - up 26.1%.

The most popular type of new car licensed in August was Volkswagen with 1,368 new VW cars sold. This was followed by Toyota (1,361), Opel (1,135), Nissan (904) and Ford (874).
