Car sales were flat in July - CSO

Figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the number of new cars licensed in July was almost unchanged from the same month last year at 14,149. The figures show a slowdown in growth this year as the June number was up around 10%. 

For the first seven months of the year, 135,609 new cars were licensed, compared with just over 121,000 in the same period last year.

Separate CSO figures showed that factory gate prices fell by 0.3% in July from June. As there was a bigger fall in July last year, the annual change showed an increase of 0.2%.

Prices in the office machinery and computers, pharmaceutical and chemical products and electrical machinery categories were the biggest monthly fallers.

A breakdown showed that prices of building and construction materials increased by 0.2% and are showing a 3.9% annual increase.

Prices of energy products rose by 16.8% in the year to July, with the rate of increase for petrol fuels running at 26.2% after an 8% rise in July alone.
