Overhaul 'complacent' partnership call

The Chambers of Commerce of Ireland has called for a fundamental restructuring of social partnership.

According to CCI chief executive John Dunne, this would include a blueprint for reforming the public sector and achieving value for money in a way the last round of benchmarking did not.

Addressing a CCI business forum in Cork on Friday afternoon, Mr Dunne said partnership was becoming increasingly ineffective and complacent about the economy and competitiveness.

While he accepted partnership still had the potential to be important, he said one of its biggest problems had been the inability of Government to follow through on decisions.

Mr Dunne added that before the next round of partnership started, a charter of how it should work needed to be drawn up. He also said it was necessary to change the way public sector pay negotiations operated, adding that in future it should be necessary for all partners to endorse the public sector pay deal before it was signed off.
