China revises 2003 economic growth figure up

China has revised upwards the growth rate of its economy in 2003 to 9.5% from 9.3%, the National Bureau of Statistics said today.

The economy also grew 9.5% in 2004, which was previously thought to have been the fastest rate since 1996.

The bureau did not provide an explanation for the 2003 revision or why it took more than a year to issue the new figures.

China is the fastest growing of the major economies as the country emerges as the workshop of the world with global consequences from lost jobs in developed countries to soaring prices on commodity markets.
