The number of new licensed vehicles on Irish roads in March rose by 9.5%, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show. A total of 23,160 new private cars were licensed in March 2005, compared with 21,142 the same time last year.

There was a dramatic increase in the number of second hand private cars licensed last month, with that category jumping by 93.9%.

The CSO said the number of new goods vehicles licenses in March 2005 rose to 4,219 from 3,434 the same time last year - an increase of 22.9%.

Today's figures show that the most popular type of new car licensed last month was Toyota, with 3,537 brand cars sold. This was followed by Ford (2,269), Renault (1,952), Volkswagen (1,788), Nissan (1,729 and Open (1,602).
